Osteoporosis Rehab.

Reducing Risk.

Most people know the word osteoporosis but do you really know what it means?

It’s a condition that results in loss of bone mass and weakening of the bones. People who have a diagnosis, are at an increased risk of fractures with the most common being a broken hip, vertebra (spine), or wrist. Fractures related to osteoporosis can happen with little or no trauma.

The good news is that we have a Physiotherapist who can help you understand what this diagnosis means and how you can live an active and healthy lifestyle with osteoporosis!

We can help!

Educate.

Physiotherapists can help you to manage problems that are related to your Osteoporosis diagnosis. The two most powerful things we do are 1) educate and empower you about your diagnosis and 2) create an individualized exercise program.

We can help you manage problems often related to osteoporosis including poor balance, fractures, strength and posture.

Strengthen.

An appropriate exercise program can help improve bone mass or slow down the rate of loss of bone mass.

Some of the factors that allow you to have strong bones are in your control! This includes things like exercises and nutrition.

Plan.

Your assessment will include a detailed medical history and an evaluation of your balance, posture and strength.

Treatment includes education and a tailored exercise program to help reduce your risk fracture/ injury.

● We will talk about the condition, your physical activity levels and your diet and nutrition as it related to bone density.

● Not all exercises and movements are safe for someone with osteoporosis. We will teach you which are safe, and best for bone building, and what movements you need to avoid or modify.

● Preventing falls and fractures by maintaining good balance and strength.

● Preventing spinal fractures and pain by focusing on maintaining good posture.

FAQs

Q: Is Osteoporosis the same and Osteoarthritis?

A: No. Osteoporosis is a weakening of our bone due to a loss of bone mass. It can lead to painful fractures. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is a progressive disease of the whole joint that leads to breakdown of joint cartilage and the underlying bone. It most commonly affects knees, hips, big toes and the spine. (Physio can help you with Osteoarthritis too though!)

Q: What if I have been diagnosed with Osteopenia, not osteoporosis?

A: Osteopenia is when your bones have begun to weaken but haven’t yet met the criteria to be classified as Osteoporosis. This is the best time to seek out some help. You will be catching it early and hopefully learning how to manage your condition before you suffer any pain fractures.

Q: What should I bring?

A: If available, please bring in the result from previous bone mineral density testing as well as a list of medication you are currently taking.

Q: What should I wear?

A: You should wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. If you’d prefer, you can change into this clothing when you arrive.
